* Offers a 68 degree apparent field of view for a wide-field window into the heavens * Optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission * Lens edges are blackened to ensure excellent contrast * One-year limited warranty If you are one of the legions of folks who have "upgraded" to a big-screen television set lately, then you've probably become spoiled by its wonderfully expansive picture. Well, if you are a telescope user, you will be equally spoiled by the wide-field window into the heavens served up by this Stratus eyepiece. With an apparent field of 68° — which translates to a 71% greater viewing area than that of a typical 52° Plossl — this eyepiece quite literally puts more stars in your eyes. In the same way you feel more a part of the action watching a big-screen TV, with this Stratus "sixty-eight" you will feel like you are really experiencing your celestial targets, rather than just viewing them from afar. You'll never go back to Plossls again! But it isn't just the Stratus' field of view that will widen your eyes. This ocular has a sophisticated eight-element optical configuration that features a monster 1-1/4"-diameter eye lens to look into.It has a generous 20mm eye relief, so you'll get the "big picture" even if you wear eyeglasses. The optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission to your eyes, and the lens edges are blackened to ensure excellent contrast. This Stratus eyepiece fits in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. It sports fold-down rubber eyeguards and a knobby rubber grip. The chrome barrel features a setscrew security recess and is threaded for filters. The eyepiece comes with protective lens and barrel caps.

Now you can enjoy comfortably long eye relief, a wide 55° apparent field, and brow-raising resolution from a telescope eyepiece that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. This remarkably affordable Orion Epic eyepiece is the ticket. And you can thank ED for making it so good. Excellent Color Correction No, ED is not Orion's resident optics whiz. "ED" stands for "Extra-low Dispersion" optical glass, a special grade of glass that boasts superior refractive properties compared to standard optical glass. In fact, ED glass is the same type used in many expensive camera lenses and high-end refractor telescopes costing several thousand dollars! An Orion exclusive, this 18mm Orion Epic ED-2 Telescope Eyepiece features a six-element lens design in which two of the elements are crafted from ED glass (hence, ED-2). This allows the Epic eyepiece to provide a luxurious 20mm of eye relief with remarkably reduced chromatic aberration and excellent sharpness. Long eye relief means that even if you wear eyeglasses, you can take in the full, unconstricted field of view. Which is a generous 55° — a wider apparent field than that of Plossl telescope eyepieces! Notice also that this eyepiece sports a nice, wide eye lens — not a small peep-hole! Another advantage of this Epic's unique optical design. $72.95 (plus $5 Shipping) I give these a 5 star rating on performance AND Value! |
Parfocal and Fully Multi-Coated The eyepiece is fully multi-coated (every air-to-glass lens surface is multi-coated) for maximum image brightness, and the lens edges are blackened for improved contrast. The Orion Epic telescope eyepiece series is parfocal, so little or no refocusing is needed when switching from one Epic eyepiece to another. The eyepiece housings are precision machined from aluminum and clear-anodized to a lustrous finish. A black rubber traction ring ensures a secure grip, and a soft rubber eyeguard helps position your eye and block out stray light. The barrel features a setscrew recess for added security, and it's threaded on the inside to accept 1.25" filters. The eyepiece comes with two end caps and a durable plastic case. This Orion Epic telescope eyepiece is ideal for viewing all types of astronomical objects, from planets to nebulas and galaxies. With performance that's a definite step above Plossls, for a price that's not much higher, this Orion Epic ED-2 telescope eyepiece represents an exciting new entry in affordable, quality eyepieces.

Edge On Planetary EyePieces
3mm Orion Edge-On Planetary Eyepieces bring flat-field performance to solar system viewing in the form of three high-magnification focal lengths. Each employs a sophisticated 7-element lens design reminiscent of exotic, high-priced oculars to provide a sharp focus all the way to the edge of their wide 55-deg apparent field of view. The barrel distortion and field curvature aberrations common in standard telescope eyepiece designs are virtually gone. Edge-On Planetary eyepieces let you push the power, whether you're canvassing the lunar terminator or studying the Jovian cloud belts. The 7-element optics are fully multi-coated for high light transmission, and each eyepiece has 20mm eye relief for viewing comfort. Other nice touches: blackened telescope lens edges, pop-down rubber eyeguards, and barrels threaded for 1.25" filters. Barrel diameter: 1.25". These are superb lunar eyepieces too! VERY sharp views and you'll love the 20mm eye relief. $105.95 each plus $5 shipping

Actual Customer Review 5/5/08 10:27 AM 26mm Q70 2" Wide-Field Eyepiece Reviewer: Daryl Powell I own many eyepieces, some that cost over six hundred dollars. The new Q- 70s totally hold their own when compared to them. I have also used seven different Q-70s in all sizes and they are all very good. Not a single bad one in the lot. In a flat field scope (RC type) scope, they are razor sharp to the edge!!! Ever bit as good as the Panoptics, Meade SWA!! Very slight curvature was seen and they were totally free from ghosting which I see even in my Naglers and Meades. I disassembled all three units to check the coatings on each element and the blackened lens edges. All lens were blackened and all elements were multi coated. The design, once disassembled, shows why they are free from ghosting and the fewer elements contributes to the brighter images when compared to the same mm eyepiece of other brands. There is very, very little to no sign of astigmatism or coma. Chromatic aberration correction was as good as the other Televue and Meade eyepieces. Contrast and detail were just as good as the Televue and a hair better than the Meade 4000 Plossel or SWA. The machining of the barrels and field stops are of the best tolerances I have seen. These eyepieces would be worth more than there asking price. If you have always wanted 2 inch wide field eyepiece of the best quality, buy this whole set and know you just couldn't do any better. I still can't believe they are (sold at this price point) if you buy the whole set. AA+. (Note from Orion: We do not recommend disassembling the eyepieces.) Q-70, $99.95 plus $5 Shipping

Product Specifications:
Note from Chris: I recommend the 32mm for telescopes f/8 and above. Below f/8, I recommend the 26mm Q70. You may eventually end up with BOTH! (I don't recommend the 38mm Q70 unless you have a 10" or larger f/10 or higher telescope. That's why I'm not offering the set of 3)
